The cytochrome-dependent enzymes are more important in anaerobic metabolism in prokaryotes. For example, in ''E. coli'', the formate:ferricytochrome-b1 oxidoreductase is an intrinsic membrane protein with two subunits and is involved in anaerobic nitrate respiration.
